cep 822: Approaches to educational research
Understanding Understanding
Understanding Understanding was a project that reinforced the importance of being aware of students' prior knowledge before teaching. The goal was to understand understanding. The coursework, discussions and assignment highlighted the misconceptions people have about various topics and framed the analysis from a context that students go to school with a large number of "naive yet well-developed and entrenched conceptions and knowledge structures, [which] often interfere with the lessons teachers are trying to teach." My group (Half 'n Half) selected to produce a video about understandings and misconceptions about rainbows. By designing questions, conducting interviews and offering manipulatives to support explanations, we created a video that highlighted the misconceptions first, but then offered a teachable moment.
The video can be watched below or found at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Hd-sXmtJ3o

A cartoonist reveals knowledge about rainbows, but it is really about situated instruction (a topic we also covered in CEP 822)!
